Artist's Description

Wasp stinger and gland, illustration. Wasps are insects, with the most common from the family Vespidae. The stinging apparatus of a wasp consists of a modified ovipositor, used to inject a poisonous venom (green) as a means of defence. The venom is produced from a gland (brown). Some stings (as here) are barbed and lodge in the animal that is attacked.
