Voltage-gated sodium channels and sodium ions in a cell membrane, illustration. Sodium (Na+) channels (blue) are composed of a large alpha subunit and one or more regulatory beta subunits (dark blue). They channel ions (orange spheres) across cell membranes, and generate and propagate action potentials in neurons and muscles.
