Description
Vasco da Gama's return, Lisbon. Historical artwork of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524, right) in 1499 presenting treasures from his voyage to King Manuel I of Portugal. Vasco da Gama's expedition departed Lisbon in July 1497, reaching India in May 1498. Only two of the four ships returned to Lisbon, arriving in July and August 1499. Vasco da Gama had failed to establish trade relations with Indian states, but returned with goods worth many times the cost of the voyage. He was given the title 'Admiral of the Indian Seas' and made a 'Dom' (Lord) by the king. This artwork is from the Lisbon Geographic Society.
