Description
Varnish. Varnish being brushed onto a wooden surface. Varnish is a transparent liquid which dries to form a hard coating, and is applied in order to protect wooden surfaces and to enhance the pattern of grain. Traditional varnishes used a protective material (such as shellac or gum) dissolved in a thinner such as alcohol or turpentine. Modern varnishes use polymers such as polyurethane as the protective agent. Varnishes may also include dilute colouring agents, wood preservatives or ultra-violet filtering agents.
