Artist's Description

Valentin Hauy (1745-1822), pioneer of blind education. Hauy, born in France, was a skilled linguist, speaking 10 different languages. The upper inscription gives details of his positions and titles and his birth date, while the lower inscription concerns his founding of the first school for the blind, shown in the bas-relief artwork at bottom. Hauy was inspired to found this school after witnessing a group of blind people being mocked during a street festival in Paris in 1771. In 1783, he was awarded the title of Interpreter to the King" (Louis XVI). Artwork from 1789, after a painting by Favart."
