Description
US Capitol after 1814 burning. Illustration of the fire-damaged partially built United States Capitol building in Washington DC, USA, after it was set on fire by the British on 24 August 1814 during the War of 1812. Blackened areas around the windows of the two wings of the building indicate fire damage. This was in part a retaliation for what was perceived as excessive destruction by US forces the previous year in York, capital of upper Canada. Construction of the US Capitol started in 1793, with the first Congress in 1800. The first dome was added in the 1820s, and the building much expanded in the 1850s. Artwork by US artist George Munger (1781-1825).
