Artist's Description
Typography and notices used by Caxton. 18th-century reproduction of the letters and type used in notices by 15th-century English printer William Caxton. Caxton was the first English printer, learning his trade in Germany and setting up a press in London in 1476. He went on to print about 100 books. These notices (used by Caxton in his books) are in several different language and dialects. The first is French; the third is Latin. The second is the ending of 'Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers' (1477), the first book printed in England. This page is from the 1785-90 edition of 'Typographical antiquities' by English antiquarian Joseph Ames (1689-1759).
