Artist's Description

Paranthropus type specimen. Fossil remains making up the type specimen of the australopithecine hominid Paranthropus (TM-1517). It was found at Kromdraai in South Africa, and described by the Scottish palaeontologist Robert Broom in 1938. It is now known as Paranthropus robustus, which means robust equal of man". The specimen consists of the left side of the skull (at top); right lower jaw with teeth; loose teeth; elbow joint; anklebone; hand and finger bones. This robust australopithecine was heavily built and its diet included vegetarian food. The face was flat and the lower jaw powerful. They lived from 2.2 to 1 million years ago in southern Africa."
