Artist's Description
Tropical rainforest. View of the roots of the plant Clusia sp. descending from a tropical rainforest canopy. Tropical rainforests are hot, humid forests in tropical areas where there is little seasonal variation in temperature (21-32 degrees C) and heavy rain all year (at least 2500mm). They are characterised by a great diversity of plant and animal species, a closed canopy layer which allows little light to reach the forest floor, and rapid nutrient cycling within the forest. Rainforests cover only 7% of the Earth's land surface but contain over half the planet's species. Photographed in the Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica.
