Trinity Test atom bomb 2 seconds after detonation, 1945. This image is part of a sequence of views looking north, showing the stages of development of the typical 'mushroom cloud'. The Trinity Test atom bomb, known as 'The Gadget', was detonated with a yield equivalent to 22 kilotons of TNT. This was the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, carried out by the US Army on 16 July 1945 in New Mexico, USA. It was developed as part of the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos Laboratory.
