Artist's Description

Transnasal brain surgery. Computer artwork of a person undergoing endoscopic transnasal brain surgery (ETBS) to remove a lesion (red) from the brain. This procedure involves the insertion of endoscopic instruments into the nose to reach the brain. It is a minimally invasive technique that leaves no scars, but can only be used to reach about 30 per cent of the brain. This procedure was first carried out in 1909 by the renowned neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing (1869- 1939).
