Torquetum. Page from the 1540 book Astronomicum Caesareum showing a torquetum, or turquet. This is a medieval astronomical instrument designed to obtain and convert measurements from three sets of coordinates: horizon, equatorial, and ecliptic. Astronomicum Caesareum is an astronomical atlas that contains early examples of volvelles, in which nested circular pieces of paper rotated by revolving on grommets. It was made for King Charles V by the German printer Petrus Apianus (1495-1552).
