Description
Tornado forming over road. Motorists stopped on a road as a developing tornado moves overhead, right-to-left, darkening the sky. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). The largest tornadoes, which form from severe thunderstorms called supercells, can be hundreds of metres across, with wind speeds of hundreds of kilometres an hour. During this outbreak, a tornado crossed the road, tossing a car more than 90 metres, seriously injuring the driver. Photographed on Interstate-70 near Quinter, Kansas, USA, on 23 May 2008.
