Description
Torfajokull caldera and Myrdalsjokull ice cap over Katla volcano, perspective view based on satellite data. North is at left with the Torfajokull caldera at upper left and the Myrdalsjokull ice cap at upper right. The dimple-like features (ice cauldrons) on the ice cap are caused by geothermal heat from Katla volcano below. Brown bands of ash are visible that were deposited by past eruptions and recently revealed by ice loss. At lower right is the smaller Eyjafjallajokull ice cap and volcano. This NASA Earth Observatory image uses Landsat data from the US Geological Survey. Image data obtained on 20 September 2014, from the Operational Land Imager on the Landsat 8 satellite, and the ASTER sensor on the Terra satellite.
