Artist's Description
Tooth disorders, dental model. This model shows the teeth of the left lower jaw of a human. This model has transparent gums, showing the roots of the teeth. Two conditions are seen here. At lower right an impacted wisdom tooth (tilted) is pressing on the second molar, inflaming the area (red) between them. Wisdom teeth are molars that usually erupt in early adult life. If there are problems, they can be removed. At centre, the first molar is cracked, has tooth decay (black), and an infected root and inflamed nerve pulp (red). Tooth decay is caused by acid-secreting bacteria feeding on food debris in the mouth. The infected area can be drilled out and filled, or the tooth can be replaced completely.
