Description
Thermal voltmeter. Historical illustration of a device called a thermal voltmeter, or hot-wire voltmeter. This example dates from around 1900, and was manufactured by the Hartmann and Braun company (founded 1882) of Frankfurt, Germany. This device works by measuring voltage from the heating effect of an electric current on a wire of suitable resistance and material. Voltage is the potential difference, also called the electromotive force, measured between two points in a flow of electric current. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
