Artist's Description

OPAL particle detector. OPAL was one of four giant particle detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider, which operated at CERN, the European centre for particle physics, from 1989 to 2000. OPAL was an assembly of many types of apparatus which fitted together around the point where the particles collided. The photograph shows OPAL's cylindrical magnet coil (centre), the 'jet chamber' (left) that fitted inside it, and the 'vertex detector' (just above the heads of the people) that formed the innermost layer. At right is one of two C-shaped structures which closed in around the cylinder & which contained the electro- magnetic & hadron calorimeters. Photo taken 1993.
