Artist's Description
The common housefly Musca domestica, on rotten fruit. A large compound eye is seen in this side view; both the thorax bearing the wings, and the lighter-coloured abdomen are haired. The housefly is a major nuisance, living, feeding and breeding in close association with humans. Musca domestica has a short life-cycle of about 18 days, yet each female will lay up to 2000 eggs. Eggs are laid in rotting fruit or vegetable matter, dung, corpses & exposed food. The resulting maggots liquify these substances to feed; adult flies pupate out in 3-4 days. Flies frequent unsavoury places and can pick up and transmit serious diseases to humans.
