Description
Microbiologist testing a water sample for bacterial contamination using membrane filtration apparatus. The water sample is placed in the container on top of the apparatus and a pump draws it through a filter or membrane. Any bacteria present are trapped in the membrane, which is then incubated to allow the bacteria to multiply. The membrane can then be examined for colonies of specific bacteria. The photograph was taken at the Newcastle Regional Public Health Laboratory which tests samples, including food products, milk and water, for bacterial or other microbial contamination.
