Description
Transmisson electron micrograph of a section of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The nuc material (DNA) appears as fibrils within the two white patches. There is no nuclear envelope, the material lies in an unorganised state within the cell. Apart from some cytoplasmic inclusions, in the main ribosomes, there are no membrane-bound cellular organelles as would be found in an animal or plant cell (i.e. mitochondrion, chloroplasts, Golgi bodies). The cell wall (outer rim) is a rigid structure. E.coli, is a well stu bacterium used in genetic research. Mag: X120,000 (at 10x8 size).
