Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of spherical, red, HIV-2 AIDS virus particles surrounding an infected T-lymphocyte. HIV-2 (human immunodeficiency virus type 2) is sufficiently different from the first AIDS virus (HIV-1) to warrant a separate classification. HIV-2 is more closely related to the AIDS-like virus found in monkeys, simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). The green area is the cytoplasm of the T-lymphocyte; its nucleus (blue) is filled with genetic material (gold), which is hijacked by the viruses in the process of viral replication. Magnification: x7425 at 6x6cm size, x4860 at 35mm size. JBU colouring. BW original is M050/110.
