Description
Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing numerous AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus paticles external to the cytoplasm of an an infected T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell. The virus particles (virions), named human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), appear as small, roughly spherical objects with dark cores. Infection with HIV depletes the population of T4 cells & thus disables the immune system, rendering its victim liable to a number of fatal diseases. Two distinct forms of the AIDS virus are now recognised (1988), designated HIV-1 and HIV-2. Magnification: x81,000 at 10x8 inch size.
