Artist's Description

James Clerk Maxwell telescope and comet. Image at night of the open dome of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), with comet Hale-Bopp seen in the sky. The standing figure provides a size scale. The JCMT is a UK Netherlands instrument with a 15 metre diameter dish which collects millimetre and sub-millimetre radiation between the infrared and radio regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This radiation comes from stars, interstellar gas clouds and galaxies. The JCMT is part of the Mauna Kea observatory sited on the 4205 metre summit of the extinct Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii. Comet Hale-Bopp was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century, visible from Earth in early 1997.
