Artist's Description
Tate family, Kitty Hawk Post Office, 1900. The Tate family of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, were the hosts of the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) when they made their pioneering glider test flights on beaches near here. At left is Captain William J. 'Bill' Tate (1869-1953), former postmaster, on the porch of his home, with his daughter Irene. The group and right are a neighbour Nancy Baum (standing), Tate's wife Addie Sibbern Tate (sitting) and her daughter Pauline. The family dog Spot is obscured by damage to the glass negative. The Wrights returned here in 1903 when carrying out their historic first flight in a heaver-than-air machine.
