T-cell infected with HIV. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) composition of a T-lymphocyte infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The small spherical virus particles (red) on the surface bud away from the cell membrane. Depletion of the population of T4 lymphocytes through HIV infection is the main reason for the destruction of a person's immune system in AIDS. Magnification: x13000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
