Artist's Description

Surinam caiman. 18th-century artwork showing a Surinam caiman (probably Paleosuchus palpebrosus) biting a South American false coral snake (Anilius scytale) to protect her young hatchling. This artwork is from 'Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium' (1705) by German nature illustrator Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717). Surinam (now called Suriname) is in northern South America.
