Surface of TRAPPIST-1f exoplanet. Illustration of a view from the surface of TRAPPIST-1f, one of the seven planets of the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. This area, near the terminator on this tidally locked planet, is shown with ice and liquid water. Three other planets are seen in the sky (from left to right: TRAPPIST-1e, TRAPPIST-1c, TRAPPIST-1d), with the parent star on the horizon. TRAPPIST-1 is Jupiter-sized, and its planets are Earth-sized with several in a habitable zone for life. Three planets were discovered in 2015, with four more discovered in 2017, with a total of three planets in the habitable zone. This system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. Image published in 2017.
