Sunspot cycles, 1874-2016. Graphical plots tracking the results of observations of sunspots on the Sun, from 1870 to 2016. The upper graph is a butterfly diagram showing the positions of the spots for each rotation of the sun. The data has been recorded by the Royal Greenwich Observatory since 1874. These results show that sunspots do not appear at random over the surface of the sun but are concentrated in two latitude bands on either side of the equator. These bands first form at mid-latitudes, widen, and then move toward the equator as each cycle progresses. The lower graph shows the average daily sunspot area for each cycle, with the cycles labelled with the numbers assigned since records began in 1755. Solar cycles 12 to 23 are shown here, with parts of cycles 11 and 24 (not labelled).
