Sunlight research. Researcher setting up a sunshine recorder on Alexander Island, Antarctica. This instrument, also known as a Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder, consists of a glass sphere (centre left) that focuses the sun's rays onto a card mounted on the circular platform. This burns a trace along the card. The length of the trace indicates light duration.
