Artist's Description

Sun's surface at different wavelengths. Composite image of the Sun's surface and atmosphere viewed using visible light and nine different wavelengths of ultraviolet light, as seen by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Each set of ten images is repeated twice for a total of 30 segments on the solar disc. The visible light is recorded by the HMI (Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager) sensor, while the ultraviolet images are from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) sensor. The HMI visible light observations at 617.3 nanometres (nm) are the smooth orange segments just before 12 o'clock, just before 4 o'clock and just before 8 o'clock on the solar disc. The ultraviolet wavelengths are (clockwise from the visible segments): 170 nm (pink), 160 nm (green), 33.5 nm (blue), 30.4 nm (orange), 21.1 nm (violet), 19.3 nm (bronze), 17.1 nm (gold), 13.1 nm (aqua) and 9.4 nm (green). Image published in 2013.
