Sun and surface structure, illustration. The features shown here include flares and coronal mass ejections. Flares are eruptions in the solar atmosphere that cause a large increase in levels of dangerous radiation and charged particles. A coronal mass ejection is a release of plasma from the solar corona. This illustration is from the ESO Supernova planetarium show 'The Sun, Our Living Star'.
