Description
Streptococcus mutans. Transmission electron micro- graph of thin-sectioned Streptococcus mutans bacteria in xylitol sugar alcohol. S. mutans is a Gram-positive, non-motile, spherical bacteria which typically form chains of cells. S. mutans cannot ferment xylitol. In its presence its cytoplasmic membrane and cell wall break releasing the cell contents (upper frame). Streptococcus mutans is found in the mouth cavity. It is one of the principal bacteria causing plaque formation on teeth, and a major cause of tooth decay. Use of xylitol as a sweetener in foods prevents S. mutans from multiplying and causing dental caries. Magnification: x100,000 at 10x8 inch size.
