Hubble Space Telescope image of the planet Jupiter taken in ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light, showing clouds and storm systems in the planet's atmosphere. Areas of the atmosphere at higher altitudes are red. At lower right is the Great Red Spot (GRS), a large storm system that has existed for at least a few hundred years. It consists of cold clouds that rotate anticlockwise several kilometres above the surrounding cloud deck. Below the GRS is the storm Red Spot Jr., which was first seen in 2000. When first observed the storm was white. It turned red in 2005, but has now reverted to white. The storm system at upper left erupted on 18th August 2020, and has properties similar to the GRS, suggesting it will also be long-lived. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It has a diameter of around 140, 000 kilometres, more than ten times that of Earth. It is a gas giant and is mostly hydrogen and helium. Imaged on 25th August 2020.
