Artist's Description

Storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), 19th century artwork. This seabird spends most of the year at sea in northern Atlantic waters, feeding in flight on plankton at the water's surface, though it is also known to follow ships (one at upper left). It is a strictly nocturnal breeder, forming colonies on islands in the northern Atlantic and western Mediterranean. Artwork printed in 1866.
