Artist's Description
Steam bath. Satirical artwork showing a woman tending to a man who is enclosed in a steam bath container at a health resort. The enclosure is sealed around his neck, allowing control of the amount of steam and the air temperature around the body. The effects are similar to sitting in a steam room, promoting sweating that is thought to clear the body of toxins. Captioned in both French and German, this artwork is from the book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
