Artist's Description

Open star cluster. Composite optical image of the open star cluster M36 (NGC 1960). North is at top. This cluster is around 4000 light years away, appearing in the constellation of Auriga. It contains around 60 relatively young, bright stars. Open clusters are believed to contain stars that all formed together from the same gas cloud. This image was taken by the 0.9-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA.
