Description
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Gram-positive, coccoid prokaryote (dividing). S. epidermidis is usually non-pathogenic, found harmlessly on the human skin (skin flora) and mucous membrane surfaces. It is associated with acne and minor skin lesions. These bacteria colonize plastic resulting in eye infections (endophthalmitis) and bacteraemia around catheters and surgical implants. Magnification: x4,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
