Artist's Description
Stable beams following LHC restart at CERN. Display screens in the CERN Control Centre (CCC), showing that the the first low-intensity stable beams have been established. This was a successful restart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN is the European particle physics laboratory. The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008. This restart took place in March after the normal winter shutdown, with data recording resuming on 23 Apr 2016. At CERN, particles are accelerated and collided at high speeds, producing new particles that are examined with large detectors. Many of the key discoveries in particle physics have been made at CERN. Photographed in April 2016.
