Artist's Description

Springtail tail. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a springtail (order Collembola) tail. This wingless insect gets it name from the specialised jumping appendage (furcula) at the end of its abdomen, often called its tail. The furcula allows the springtail, which is between 1 and 2 millimetres long, to leap several inches. Springtails have remained anatomically unchanged for millions of years, and are considered living fossils. They live mainly in leaf litter, feeding on decaying matter.
