Description
Spiral Jetty. Satellite image of the Spiral Jetty (lower left) in Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA. This jetty is an earthwork sculpture built in 1970. It was designed by the US sculptor Robert Smithson (1938-1973). The jetty is 4.5 metres wide and over 450 metres long (including the counter-clockwise spiral). The jetty rocks were originally black, but are now white due to encrusted salt from the highly saline water of the Great Salt Lake. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 14 September 2002.
