Description
Spectrum of Arcturus. High resolution spectrum of light coming from the star Arcturus (alpha Bootis), a cool giant star of spectral Type K. The spectrum is populated by dark lines. These lines, known as Frauenhofer lines, are caused by the absorption of different wavelengths by elements in the star's atmosphere. Analysis of the position and strength of the lines tells us much about the star's composition. This image was made from data gathered by the Coude Feed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona.
