Artist's Description
Artist's impression of the Freedom space station in orbit. This illustration shows an early-1990s configuration for the proposed international project. At the centre of the structure are four pressurised modules, three for experiments (American, European and Japanese) and one for habitation. Just below these is a visiting Space Shuttle. In 1993, the new Clinton Administration ordered a radical re-design of the project, making it smaller and attempting to cut costs by 50%. Freedom might not now become permanently crewed, but may instead support extended visits as in the earlier Skylab.
