Description
Space shuttle Discovery (mission 51-A, the 14th shuttle mission) showing astronaut Dale Gardner inserting a stinger device into the nozzle of the stranded and spinning Westar VI communication satellite. The device stabalizes the satelllite, after which it is towed to the spacecraft and returned to earth for repair. Palapa B-2, also damaged, was similarly recovered. The manned maneuvering unit (MMU), or motorised backpack, enabled the astronaut to travel free of the spacecraft. The eight day mission (8th-16th November 1984) saw the deployment of two new communications satellites, Telesat H & Syncom IV- 1. Karl Esch 10x8 colour print S19-104-029
