Description
Southern North America, 1540s. 16th-century map of the southern regions of the continent of North America, with the map orientated with south at top. Florida is at centre, and Mexico is at upper right. The islands of the Caribbean are at upper left. Across bottom are some of the peoples, settlements, flora and fauna of what is today the southern USA. This map was traced in pen and ink and red paint in around 1850 from a manuscript world map created in 1542 for King Henry II of France. The map was published in Jomard's 'Les monuments de la geographie' (1842-1862).
