Artist's Description
South American tree iguanas. 19th-century illustration of two tree iguanas from South America. At top is the Chilean tree iguana (Liolaemus chiliensis), found in Chile and Argentina. At bottom is the graceful tree iguana (Liolaemus gracilis), found in Argentina. The older genus name Proctotretus is given here. This page of illustrations is Plate 1 from the 1843 volume on reptiles ('Part V: Reptiles') that forms part of the multi-volume work 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle'. This work described the animals collected and observed by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during the survey voyage of HMS Beagle during the years 1832 to 1836. This expedition established Darwin's reputation as a naturalist. 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle' was edited by Darwin and published between 1838 and 1843. The volume on reptiles was written by British naturalist Thomas Bell. The artist is named here as Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
