Artist's Description
South American tree frogs, 19th-century illustration. Across top is the emerald forest frog (Hylorina sylvatica), found in Chile and Argentina. At lower left and centre right is the Montevideo tree frog (Hypsiboas pulchellus), with an older binomial name given here (Hyla agrestis). The frog at lower right is Hyla vauterii. This page of illustrations is Plate 19 from the 1843 volume on reptiles ('Part V: Reptiles') that forms part of the multi-volume work 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle'. This work described the animals collected and observed by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during the survey voyage of HMS Beagle during the years 1832 to 1836. This expedition established Darwin's reputation as a naturalist. 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle' was edited by Darwin and published between 1838 and 1843. The volume on reptiles was written by British naturalist Thomas Bell. The artist is named here as Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
