Description
Sounding rocket at launch. This is the NASA Black Brant XII rocket, which stands 20 metres tall. It is used to collect data from the upper atmosphere, at altitudes of 48-161 kilometres. This is between the maximum altitude for balloons and the minimum altitude for satellites. The rocket is composed of a rocket motor, which powers its ascent, and a payload of scientific instruments. These collect data on the chemical and physical processes that occur in this region of the atmosphere, as well as information on the Sun, galaxies and other phenomena. The data is relayed to researchers on the ground by radio links.
