Bas relief detail of a soldier with a mastiff dog standing at the edge of the arena where a royal hunt of lions was staged for King Ashurbanipal of Nineveh, Iraq (645 - 640 BC). The dogs were positioned so as to stop the lions from escaping. The sculpture is on a gypsum panel from the palace wall. British Museum.
