Artist's Description
Solar activity. Extreme ultraviolet (UV) satellite image showing a solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) erupting from the surface of the Sun on 2nd January 2012. It appears that the force of the blast was unable, for some of the material, to overcome the pull of the Sun's magnetic fields and a portion of the strands fell back to the Sun. This blast was not directed at the Earth. Imaged by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
