Description
Sodium reacting with chlorine to form sodium chloride (NaCl, common salt). The flat-bottomed flask is full of the halogen gas chlorine (Cl2). A combustion spoon holding a piece of the alkali metal sodium (Na) has been lowered into the flask. The reaction is violent and exothermic (heat- releasing).
